Friday Art Lab

Spanish Art Intensive

Ages: 12-17

Fridays, Oct 2-Oct 23 | 3:30-5 pm

Tuition: $105 (includes $35 materials fee)

Instructor: Carolina Silva

Location: VCA Breezeway

Students in this Spanish immersion class will explore different art materials and techniques as they create personal projects. The work of a different Hispanic artist will be explored each week, and students will create projects inspired from the history, time period and culture of the artist. Carolina Silva brings her background in Art History and her Spanish heritage to support the personal creative explorations of students.

Each class will focus on a different project, inspired by the following artists:

•Francisco De Goya - We will look at the darkness and light in the etchings, drawings and painting of this 18th Century artist who through his work was a commentator and chronicler of his era. How can we chronicle our times through art?

•Freda Kahlo - Life experience is a common theme in Frida Kahlo's powerful drawings and paintings. We will look at her work and then delve into our own personal narratives, exploring the concept of "self".

•Joan Miró - We will look at the personal style of this artist and his bold use of color and form in his exploration of the unconscious or subconscious. His sculptures teach us how to "see" out of mundane or simple objects and we will create sculptures with found objects and this perception in mind.

•Gego - Gego is a Venezuelan artist best known for her geometric and kinetic sculptures made in the 1960s and 1970s, which she described as "drawings without paper". We will explore this idea, using wire and other materials to explore concepts of negative space making mobiles.

•Lygia Clark - We will look at the work of this constructivist Brazilian artist, her installations and sculptures, to work on our own constructions using cardboard, balsa wood and other materials.
