Saturday & Sunday, Nov 4 & 5 |10 am-5 pm

Tuition: $240 (includes $20 materials fee)

Instructor: Yoshi Nakagawa

Location: Blue Heron Gallery

Nengajyo is a traditional custom in Japan, making and sending new year's postcards to friends and family. The Japanese new year is celebrated on January 1st, with best wishes and images of the Chinese Zodiac animal of the coming year. In this workshop, participants learn relief printmaking techniques with 4”x6” linoleum plates, and hand sewing with Japanese washi paper & thread. Each participant will be assigned a zodiac animal and draw its image, transfer the one-color image on the plate, carve, and hand print an edition on washi with oil-based ink. Next, we paint with watercolor. Students will keep one print and exchange their other prints from the edition with their classmates, so that each person has a variety of animals to sew together as a paper quilt.

Yoshi Nakagawa pulled her first print at the University of Puget Sound in 1999. Her artwork is influenced by patterns of the natural world and Japanese textiles, along with her experiences living in Mexico and Japan. She has exhibited and taught workshops in the US, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Africa and Honduras. She resides in Tacoma.
